Research on Kalmegh ....

Several Kalmegh researches have been done in USA regarding kalmegh and its contraceptive effects.

  1. Researchers at the Hallehalsan Clinic in Ulricehamn, Sweden recently carried out two clinical trials from uncomplicated upper-respiratory-tract infections. The primary outcome measures in the patients' self-evaluations were muscle pain, extent of coughing, throat discomfort, headache, nasal symptoms, eye irritations and body temperature.
Conclusion: The throat was the area of the body most influenced by Andrographis-paniculata ingestion; in both studies throat signs and symptoms showed the most significant improvement.

  2. Hepatoprotective and antioxidant property of Andrographis paniculata (Nees) in BHC induced liver damage in mice at Zoology Department, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, USA.
Conclusion: AP showed protective effects in the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase as well the level of glutathione. The activity of lipid peroxidase was also decreased. The result indicates antioxidant and hepatoprotective action of A. paniculata.

  3. Hepatoprotective effects of Andrographis paniculata against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage. College of Pharmacy, Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science, Indore, USA.
conclusion: Andrographolide produces a significant increase in bile flow, bile salt, and bile acids in conscious rats and anaesthetized guinea pigs. The paracetamol induced decrease in volume and content of bile was prevented significantly by andrographolide pretreatment. It was found to be more potent than silymarin, a clinically used hepatoprotective agent.

  4. The Kalmegh extract and its active constituents, andrographolides were found to have liver protective properties. These compounds helped to increase bile flow and repair chemically induced liver damage, in laboratory trials1,2. In recent years the role of Andrographis paniculata in the management of the common cold has received a lot of attention.

  5. A double blind placebo controlled study performed in Sweden, with 50 patients treated with a herbal preparation containing Andrographis paniculata (4 tablets each containing 85 mg A. paniculata extract were administered thrice a day for 5 days). It produced positive results in terms of relief from symptoms of the common cold.

  6. One hundred and fifty-two adult patients with pharyngotonsillitis were enrolled in the randomized double blind study to assess the efficacy of Andrographis paniculata.

  7. It was investigated for its suggested influence on the biosynthesis of eicosanoids and the platelet-activating factor (PAF). Whereas in isolated human polymorph-nuclear leukocytes (PMNL) no influence on the biosynthesis was found, it could be shown that andrographolide inhibits PAF-induced human blood platelet aggregation in a dose dependent manner (IC50-5 microM). These results indicate that andrographolide has a mechanism of action different from that of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) and most likely associated with the cardiovascular and antithrombotic activity described of Andrographis paniculata.

These researches were done successfully with the appropriate result.
